Primate Study
During the fourth quarter of this grant, we have continued to perform developmental and
cognitive assessments on the last group of animals that were enrolled on the study in the Spring
of 2012. Enrollment is now complete for this study with a total of 79 animals. Out of these 79
animals, 55 of these have completed all procedures and have undergone necropsy. Of the
remaining 24 animals on the study, 12 will complete study requirements by May 2013 and the
last 12 will complete study requirements between Oct-Dec 2013.

Neuropathology Data
The additional animals that underwent necropsy since the last quarterly report are undergoing
neuropathological analysis to examine cell number, size and organization in the hippocampus
and cerebellum. The overall trend we are seeing is an increase Purkinje cell size in primates
receiving thimerosal-containing vaccines compared to controls, as well as an overall increase in
Purkinje cell area. This data is being collected and analyzed as each animal ends the study as it
represents a very large dataset that requires many hours of analysis. Our goal is to be able to
publish the neuropathology data soon after the study is completed in early 2014.

Two Men ~ One Major Goal for Autims

Ted Lindsay, retired Detroit Red Wings player and Joel Walendowski, custom bike builder have joined together because of a common goal. Who are these two wonderful people and why?

Ted Lindsay is a former Detroit Red Wings player, actually a former NHL Captain of the Detroit Red wings. He played hockey from 1944 through 1965 as a left-winger. Ted wore number 7 with a “c” on his jersey during his career and skated with other hockey legends including likes of Gordie Howe and Sid Abel. After his team won the Stanley Cup in 1950, Ted, being the leader he was, grabbed the trophy cup, raised it above his head and skated around the rink for all to see. This was the first time this has been done by any player and now this tradition is done by all members of the team who wins the Stanley Cup.

Ted learned about autism from his goo friend, John Czarnecki, who had a son, Dominic with autism which lead Ted to start The Ted Lindsay Foundation in 2001. The foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds several different kinds of events including sales of autographed photographs and through direct donations which all contribute to helping research into the cause and a possible cure for autism. Many volunteers work every day on the top floor of the Troy Sports Center. Ted`s son-in-law, Lew LaPaugh is not taking over most of Ted`s duties for the foundation. Ted and Lew both agree that the foundation would not be what it is today without all the help of those special volunteers.

Joel Walendowski, is the owner of the Angels N Iron (ANI), a custom metal fabrication shop in Marine City as well as a member of the Local 687 Detroit Carpenter`s Union. Joel`s cousin Devon is also a child with autism. After researching the disorder, Joel wanted to do something unique to help raise awareness to autism and the challenges that so many families and the children with autism face during their lifetime. He took his talents for building bikes and created an awesome bike to bring awareness and to help the cause and search for a cure for autism.

Sounds like two familiar stories and what brought the these two together.

This custom chopper has Ted`s No 7 on the oil tank and the Red Wing logo end caps on the handgrips. The ignition bracket is shaped like three puzzle pieces symbolizing the logo for autism. The rest of the bike is painted to resemble puzzle pieces as well. After being asked by Joel, Ted graciously autographed the back fender. Joel`s hope is to have many more Red Wing players sign the chopper as well.

This chopper is an inspiration, a reason and a meaningful purpose of helping those in need. Thanks to Ted and Joel.
